Your job as an affiliate is to write copy that "presells" the prospect. Then it is the job of the merchant to convert that traffic to a sale. Do a good job preselling and the shopper is more likely to spend.

I see way too many affiliate web sites that miss the boat here. They scream, "BUY SOMETHING FROM ME, I'M DESPERATE" instead of offering help or content or advice to the shopper. So the shopper's guard is up, their resistance to buying anything increases, and no sales result.
